GEORGE HART

From Hyperbolic Tessellations to Rapid Prototyping Sculpture

George W. Hart
Dept. Computer Science
Stony Brook University

Rapid Prototyping technology allows the computer-controlled creation of
physical 3D objects.  A range of examples will be shown, including
mathematical models, mechanical puzzles, and geometric sculpture.  A
novel algorithm for creating "water-tight" 3D struts from embedded
graphs will be presented, which was applied for the creation of
intricate forms based on uniform hyperbolic tessellations.  For more
information, see http://www.georgehart.com/rp/rp.html

·         JUEVES 9 DE OCTUBRE, 12:00 HORAS, Salón de ACTOS de la ETSI Informática (para TODO TIPO DE PÚBLICO, ESTUDIANTES Y PORFESORES)

Mathematical Sculpture

George W. Hart
Dept. Computer Science
Stony Brook University

George W. Hart will show slides of some of his mathematically informed
sculptures. These include works made of metal, wood, acrylic, or found
objects, and often use laser-cutting or rapid prototyping technologies
in their realization. Also shown will be brief videos of the assembly of
some large commissions: a six-foot sculpture constructed from 642 CDROMs
in the Computer Science building at U.C. Berkeley, a five-foot sculpture
constructed at a community "barn raising" event, and a "Salamanders"
sculpture assembled by students when he was artist in residence at MIT.
Mathematical and computer science aspects of these designs will be
discussed. For examples of Hart's work, see www.georgehart.com
